Unknown gunmen on Tuesday killed Chris Dega, the Senior Special Assistant On Security to Benue Governor Samuel Ortom in Jos, Plateau State Capital.
Governor’s spokesperson, Terver Akase in a statement said late Mr Dega was fatally shot severally on his chest.
Governor Ortom in March escaped an assassination attempt during a visit to his farm. A faceless group claiming to be Fulani nationalists claimed responsibility for the attack.
Benue state continues to face unrest following perennial invasion of communities by nomadic herdsmen. The herdsmen have continued to rail against state’s anti-open grazing law which was passed in 2017, in some instance vowing that the state would know no peace until the law which threatens their encroachment occupation was repealed.
Killing of top public figures have occurred in the last few days.
The registrar of top examination body, NECO, Professor Godswill Obioma, on Monday night was killed by suspected assassins, his wife told The Gazette.
Last Sunday, Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was killed by unknown gunmen in Owerri, the Imo state capital, The Gazette reported.
Late Mr Dega was a Commissioner of Police in Borno and Edo states.
