The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed that those who died in the tragic tanker explosion in Freetown last Friday will be given mass burial.
The authorities equally appealed for urgent blood donations to treat more than 100 burn victims as hospitals will run out of blood supplies for the burn victims in 72 hours.
According to the Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the explosion happened at a junction outside the Choithram Supermarket at about 10:00 p.m. on Friday after a tanker filled with fuel collided with a lorry.
The two drivers who noticed a leak in their vehicles warned people to stay away. The explosion occurred when people tried to collect the fuel from the tanker.
The NDMA confirmed that the lorry was completely burnt down while other shops and market stalls were caught up in the flames.
Sierra Leone President Julius Maado Bio has declared three days of national mourning for last Friday’s disaster and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.
