Ten Things to know about Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo

Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) died last night at about 11p.m at the age of 63 .

His death was announced by Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

Here are ten things to know about Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo.

1. Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo was born on the 20 April 1959
2. He previously served as Acting Secretary General in 2006, represented Nigeria on OPEC’s Economic Commission Board from 1993 to 2008.
3. He led the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2010
4. He headed Nigeria’s technical delegation to UN climate negotiations beginning in 1991.
5. Barkindo completed his bachelor’s degree in political science from Ahmadu Bello University (Zaria, Nigeria) in 1981.
6. In 1988 he earned a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Economics from Oxford University.
7. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Federal University of Technology Yola.
8. He was the only Nigerian Delegate to attend all 15 Conferences of the Parties to the UNFCCC from the Conference of the Parties, COP1 in Berlin 1995 to COP15 in Copenhagen 2010.
9. Dr. Barkindo, who was re-elected Vice-President at COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
10. He was Special Assistant to the Minister of Petroleum Resources and Head, Office of the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC Board.
