Despite the early morning rain on Monday, Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress joined members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to embark on a protest against the continued strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The students took their protest to the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, demanding an end to the strike.
They said they are tired of staying at home, cut off from their academic pursuits.
The situation caused gridlock along the axis as vehicular movements in and out of the airport were stalled.
Sowore, who is the leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement had in the past said he would also take part in any protest against ASUU strike once the students have made up their minds.
ASUU and the Nigerian Government have been at loggerheads over poor funding of universities and the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, a platform on which the government said all lecturers must be registered or they would not be paid salaries.
However, ASUU opposed the introduction of IPPIS as the payment platform, claiming that it did not take care of its peculiarities and insisted that it would rather use the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.
The disagreement between both parties has led to the closure of all government universities for the last eight months.
