Some hoodlums attacked a division of the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State on Wednesday.

A source told said that the hoodlums who attacked Ihiala Police Division were armed with guns and explosives.

A source in the community said the area was thrown into panic early Wednesday morning following the attack.

“It was scary as those guys were armed; they even used explosives to try to blow up the police division,” the source said.

The spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack but added that it was repelled by police personnel after a gun battle.

It was gathered that the hoodlums threw explosive devices into the station which destroyed parts of the divisional headquarters.

Speaking on the telephone, Ikenga said the police in addition to repelling the gunmen, recovered an AK-47 left behind by the hoodlums.

He regretted that the explosives affected part of the building.

Ikenga said, “Our operatives in the early hours of today engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police division and recovered one abandoned AK-47 rifle.”

He added that no casualty was recorded during the attack and that the assailants fled because of the superior firepower of the police.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station had already ignited fire that affected the building,” he said.
