President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Tahir Mamman, the Vice-Chancellor of Baze University, for a ministerial position in his government. Mamman is a professor of law and has served as the Vice-Chancellor of Baze University since 2013. The university is owned by Dr Datti Baba Ahmed, the running mate of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Election.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, submitted the supplementary ministerial list to the Senate.
The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives submitted the second list with the second batch of ministerial nominees to the Senate President.
Already, the Senate has screened the 28 nominees in the first batch.
Tahir Mamman OON, SAN is a Professor of law, Senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Educational administrator and the Director-general of the Nigeria Law School from 2005 to 2013. He is the current Vice chancellor of Baze University Abuja and member governing board of Niger delta development commission NDDC. He is a recognized member of the Body of Benchers. In 2010 he became a board member of the International Association of Law Schools based in Washington DC. In September 2015, he was conferred as a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN). In recognition of his efforts, the Federal Government of Nigeria bestowed him with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger(OON).
The nomination of Mamman has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the nomination, saying that Mamman is a qualified and experienced individual who would be a valuable asset to the government. Others have criticized the nomination, saying that it is a conflict of interest given that Mamman’s university is owned by Datti Baba Ahmed the Vice Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, who is a political opponent of President Tinubu.
