Commercial drivers in Abia State have condemned the hikes in the transport tariffs by the state government.
According to them, the hikes followed the launch of a new digital tax system of revenue collection by Governor Alex Otti.
The new system would see the state maximise its revenue potential, according to the state’s Chief Executive Officer.
Speaking to SaharaReporters, some drivers requested an immediate downward review of the ticket fees.
According to them, it is insensitivity on the part of the state government to increase the tariffs amid the prevailing harsh economic situation.
“Please help us tell the Abia state government that the new prices for daily tickets are bad for motorists. The past government did take N500 daily from us but now it’s N800.
“How can one get daily bread with this new price and also with the increase in fuel price? It’s so sad,” one of the drivers revealed.
Another driver noted that they may be forced to increase transport fares, which according to him, will further put hardship on residents in the state.
“We may be forced to increase transport fares. Before, commercial vehicles – pick-up and buses – used to pay N500 daily but the new government just increased it to N800.”
He added, “Plans are also ongoing to ground our operations over the increase by the Otti-led government. Passengers may have to trek since the government wants to kill us.”
