Personnel of the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday morning arrested Giwa Yisa while protesting with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students against fees increment by the school authorities.
It had been reported how the police shot at students during the protest and arrested an activist, Philip Olatinwo and two other protesters.
It was learnt further that among those arrested is the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Public Relations Officer, Giwa Yisa Topnotch. An X user, Bushari Shamsudeen while making this known demanded for immediate release of Giwa. Bushari wrote: “Nigerian Police Force Headquarters Must Release the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Public Relations Officer, Giwa Yisa Topnotch with immediate alacrity.” “Release the national pro of nans and the deputy senate President of nans or we shut down the Lagos state police headquarters with immediate effect @jidesanwoolu @NigeriapolicePR #unilagprotest,” another user wrote.
The NANS had on Tuesday informed the police of plans to hold the peaceful protest on September 6, 2023, at the University of Lagos. NANS had warned the Department of State Services not to prevent students from exercising their rights to protest, saying it is a universally recognised human right. But in an update, it was learnt that the police had disrupted the protest, shooting at the protesters and arrested some of the students.
“Update: @activistfemi, Philip Olatinwo, and two others have been arrested by @PoliceNG after shooting at Unilag students protesting over fee hike,” a source said
