A man, Misbahu Salihu, 28, has allegedly poisoned his day-old daughter to death over male child preference in Kano State, North-West Nigeria.
Salihu, a resident of Doka Baici community in the Tofa Local Government Area of the state, reportedly poisoned the baby girl to death because he was expecting a male child.
He has since been arrested by the operatives of the Islamic police, Hisbah, according to its Deputy Commander-General, Mujahid Aminuddeen.
Aminuddeen told journalists on Saturday that the suspect had informed officials of the board that he gave the baby a local insecticide.
“Salihu also drugged the mother of the baby, Sa’ade, with a cup of tea which contained sleeping tablets before carrying out the criminal act.
“The suspect confessed to the crime, saying he preferred a male child but his wife gave birth to a female, which prompted him to end the baby’s life.
“He had been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution,” Aminuddeen said.
