Narrating the incident, Karis said that she started working for Mr. Oluwabusayo in August this year as an admin and social media manager, and that she was handling the Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok and WhatsApp pages for Oluwabusayo with an agreement of N100,000 salary.
A woman, Ajakpovi Osamudiame karis, has accused Nigerian policemen attached to Ilasan Division, Lagos Island, the Divisional Police Officer and her employer, Mr. Idowu Lawrence Oluwabusayo, of physically assaulting her and extorting the sum of N10,000 from her.
Karis, who said the incident happened on Thursday, told SaharaReporters that she was assaulted so much that she could barely move her neck, adding that her phone was damaged in the process.
Narrating the incident, Karis said that she started working for Mr. Oluwabusayo in August this year as an admin and social media manager, and that she was handling the Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok and WhatsApp pages for Oluwabusayo with an agreement of N100,000 salary.
Meanwhile as this went on, she said, “We were able to come to a compromise that I would be working as a customer care representative and also handle the social media which were Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Tiktok and Twitter. He reduced the payment to N60,000 and we agreed.”
Following their new agreement, Karis said she started working as a customer care representative and social media manager, “but he started giving me admin responsibilities to do, asking me to draw up contracts for his workers, create price lists, do account correlating and other things that are not my duties but for an admin officer.”
Karis, who said she lives in the same compound with her employer said that on Monday, Mr. Oluwbusayo barged into her room and started shouting at her over an assignment.
On Tuesday, Karis said that Mr. Oluwbusayo collected the official phone she was using from her and “I didn’t work on Tuesday, I reached out to him and asked him the update on my working with him since he has collected the official phone from me, I don’t know if it means he has sacked me or not. He said he wanted to transfer his information from the phone to another phone, and that he would give me a new phone.”
She said she reached out to him on Thursday morning and asked him about the phone as she had not worked, saying that she asked him what the problem was as she didn’t want a situation whereby at the end of the month, he would refuse to pay her salary.
She noted that “Before I started using the official phone to work, I was using my phone to attend to his social media, Instagram, Tiktok and Twitter. But when he gave me the official phone, I stopped using my phone to attend to anything.
“After I reached out to him asking him if he doesn’t want me to work for him again, I reached out to my phone and found out that I was still logged in on their Twitter and the Tiktok. So I decided to change the password so that only me will have the password of that account in case he tries to act funny at the end of the month, that he would not pay me anything, I was going to use it as leverage to get him to pay my salary completely.
“When he found out that I had changed the Tiktok account, he dashed into my room, jacked me up from my neck and tried to drag my phone from my hand. He was dragging my phone seriously that my screen was spoiled and my phone is bad right now. My neck is paining me right now that I can’t even turn my neck well. There are injuries on my hand. He broke my doors, broke my chair.”
Karis said that when people gathered and asked what was happening, Mr. Oluwabusayo threatened to arrest her and show her who is who in Lagos, “that he was going to mess me up in Lagos.
“So, when he said he was going to arrest me, I also threatened him that if he was going to arrest me, I was going to expose him to the police to tell them that he is a gay, because apparently being gay is a crime in Nigeria.”
She explained that when different men sent love messages to the social media pages she was managing with Mr. Oluwbusayo’s phone, and that when she told Mr. Oluwbusayo, he asked her to ignore them.
She said that on Thursday when her boss said that he was going to arrest her, she also threatened to expose him to the police that he was a gay and that he was also committing a crime by being gay because it was illegal in Lagos.
At the police station, Karis said she told them her own part of the story but Mr. Oluwabusayo told the police she hacked into his account.
She said the DPO insulted her, called her evil and useless and threatened to lock her up, adding that while the police continued to harass her, Mr. Oluwabusayo went through her phone in front of the police and saw the evidence she had on him allegedly showing he was a gay and everything was deleted.
She said the police detained her and after going back and forth, despite not seeing any evidence of blackmail, the police forced her to write an undertaking that if any video or anything went out, she would be held responsible and the law would take its course.
“After everything, they said I should bring two sureties to come and stand for me to sign. I should bail myself with N50,000 and I had to beg before they accepted N10,000. They brought a POS person for me to make payment to that person so that the person would give me cash. They refused to give their personal accounts. They have their own in-house POS person that you do transfer to.”
When contacted, Mr Idowu alleged that Miss Karis leaked his private messages and nude contents to her boyfriend and he confronted her, she fought him with a ceramic plate and scissors.
He said, “Last month, I employed Miss Karis as my Administrative Assistant and I gave her my personal phone which has my personal intimate conversations. She was using the phone and she was not supposed to check my former chats and my old chats and my stuffs because I was trying to remove them but I could not find a way to remove them.
“Last two days, I felt like she was going to stop working. I had not even informed her, so I got a new phone and I wanted to move the chats. She started acting up, like, did I want to stop her from work and I told her if I want to stop her from working, I will tell her.
“I just realized yesterday morning that someone hacked into my Tiktok and I asked her who hacked it but she denied it. I said please, can I go through your phone? It turned into an assault and she started saying she has pictures and video evidence.
“She took scissors and wanted to stab me. She took a plate to break my head in front of over three witnesses. I decided to take it to the police station. I took it to the police and the police interrogated the case and found out she was at fault and she signed an undertaking because she was threatening me that she was going to use my intimate chats with people and also my nudes.
“She denied it but further interrogation showed that she had leaked some of my pictures and intimate chats with some of her friends. She just gave us the password yesterday night after the issue at the police station.”
Also, when contacted, the officer who answered on behalf of the DPO denied any form of extorting and forcing Karis to write undertaking under duress, saying that “It was a criminal case but because she is a small girl, we just handled it as a small civil case.
“She was sharing her boss’ private conversations and videos with her boyfriend and her boss has evidence about it. She was supposed to keep his secret and that is why she was employed as a personal assistant. What she did was wrong and she knows it.”
