Orderly At Enugu University Hospital Dies At Same Facility After Doctor’s Rejection Over ‘Lack Of Bed Space’

According to hospital sources, the deceased, identified as Florence Eze, was an orderly attached to the medical ward of the hospital.

There is a mixture of grief and despondency among the staff members of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital – ESUT-Parklane following the death of a ward orderly after being rejected over “lack of bed space”.

One of the sources revealed that Eze delivered a baby two weeks earlier at the hospital.

“Unfortunately, two days after the delivery, she began to have complications. She was rushed to the theatre and was discharged after a few days.

“Two days later, she was rushed to the hospital. Regrettably, the doctors in the emergency ward refused to attend to her. The chief doctor at the emergency ward told her husband point-blank that there was no bed space and because of that, she could not be attended to.

“The doctor insisted despite pleas from nurses and other staff members of the hospital that she could be admitted to the hospital ward but this doctor refused. Unfortunately, we lost this staff member because the doctor refused to attend to her,” the source explained.

Meanwhile, another staff member of the hospital said that because of the incident, the Chief Medical Director, Prof Bethrand Ngwu has directed that on no account should any patient be rejected on account of bed space.

According to the source, the incident forced the CMD – who reportedly comes to work once in a while – to come more regularly to supervise the performance of doctors and nurses at the accident and emergency unit regularly, to avoid a repeat of Florence Eze’s experience.

“To pacify the late Eze’s family for the loss, the CMD has promised that all the money they paid to the hospital will be refunded to them while the one yet to be paid had been written off as a way of assisting the family,” one of the sources said.

However, efforts to speak with the CMD, Prof. Ngwu were unsuccessful as he did not answer his calls or reply to a text message sent to him.
