The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) following their meeting with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, will hold a joint extraordinary National Executive Council meeting by 7pm today to decide on the ongoing nationwide strike.
It was earlier reported that the meeting between the Nigerian government and organised labour over the ongoing nationwide strike ended with no resolution.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu had invited the labour leaders to his office in Abuja for a meeting in an effort to end the strike declared by the organised labour to protest against the attack and brutalisation of the NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State capital, on November 1 by policemen and thugs.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that the NSA had in a statement said that some Ajaero’s attackers had been arrested and that investigation on the matter is ongoing, which he said his office is coordinating.
Meanwhile, the National Vice President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, disclosed the strategic meeting by 7pm in an interview with PUNCH in Abuja, adding that the NSA briefed the leadership of the organised labour on the steps taken so far.
He said, “We commend the steps taken so far by the NSA. He made us understand that he didn’t see the issue on the ground as a political fight. He also noted that two people have been arrested in line with the brutalisation of Ajaero. Initially, the government felt the strike would not hold. They were shocked to see that we went ahead with our threats.
“We are going to have an extraordinary joint NEC this evening by 7pm and I can tell you there is hope.”
