A group comprising 60 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives has threatened to decamp if the acting national chairman, Umar Ililya Damagum, does not resign from his position.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with Damagum’s leadership, the lawmakers insisted that the replacement should hail from the North Central region, in adherence to the party’s constitutional provisions.
Citing Damagum’s alleged alliance with FCT minister Nyesom Wike, the lawmakers accused him of surrendering PDP’s leadership reins to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Hon Ugochinyere Ikenga, spearheading the initiative alongside five other legislators, conveyed these grievances to the press at the National Assembly.
Ikenga lambasted Damagum, attributing the party’s predicament to his purported indulgence in anti-party activities, likening his actions to selling out the party for personal gain.
Drawing parallels, he highlighted the importance of consistency in opposition politics, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s trajectory as a case in point.
The lawmakers emphasized that Damagum’s continued presence could spell doom for the party, urging for his prompt removal to avert further damage.
They concluded with a stark warning, indicating their readiness to defect to other political parties if their demands remain unaddressed.
