Passengers in large numbers are currently stranded at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos due to the ongoing strike embarked upon by organised labour.
The situation is similar at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where many passengers are also stranded, SaharaReporters learnt on Monday.
This was captured in a viral video and photographs showing that the airport’s domestic terminal entry had been closed and no movement was permitted.
SaharaReporters had reported how the organised labour said its plan to commence an indefinite strike on Monday would stand despite last-minute moves by the National Assembly leadership to avert the industrial action.
The representatives of organised labour on Sunday said they lacked the power to call off the strike, adding that there was no going on the industrial action on Monday.
Giving an update on the matter in a special circular issued by an indigenous airline, United Nigeria dated June 3, 2024, it was noted that all airports across the country were affected by the ongoing strike.
The circular reads: “We regret to inform you that due to the strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates, airports across the country have been shut down. As a result, none of our scheduled flights has been permitted to depart the airport, significantly affecting our services and operations.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this may cause to your travel plans. Please rest assured that we are actively monitoring the situation to evaluate its impact on our operations and will provide updates accordingly.”
