The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raided a snake-guarded shrine used to store illicit drugs in Igor community, Benin City, Edo State.
According to a statement released by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, the raid took place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
The statement said the operatives discovered a large, specially constructed hole in the wall of the shrine, concealed by wallpapers and adorned with fetish objects. This hidden storage contained 8.743 kilograms of various illicit substances, including methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and Arizona, all potent strains of cannabis.
“The ingenuity and audacity of traffickers to use such extreme measures as a snake-guarded shrine highlight the challenges we face,” Babafemi remarked.
During the operation, two women, Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani, were apprehended after a large black snake guarding the shrine was safely neutralised.
Babafemi reiterated the NDLEA’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking in the region, stating, “Our efforts are relentless, and we will continue to pursue and bring to justice those involved in drug trafficking.”
