President Bola Tinubu convened an urgent closed-door meeting on Thursday with top traditional rulers, key security officials, and governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in anticipation of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest scheduled for August 1.
The meeting took place at the State House in Abuja, the capital of the nation.
The meeting was led by Hope Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, who was accompanied by the APC governors.
Several prominent traditional rulers attended the meeting with the President, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III, along with other distinguished traditional leaders from across the nation.
Meanwhile, the meeting was attended by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, as well as various ministers and other members of the President’s cabinet.
A group of Islamic scholars (Ulamas) later joined the high-level meeting with the President.
Media earlier reported that Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, warned at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday that the military would not permit anarchy to erupt in Nigeria.
He had suggested that the organisers of the planned protest aim to emulate the recent violent demonstrations in Kenya, which began as peaceful protests but descended into chaos.
General Buba emphasised that while citizens have the right to express their grievances, the military will not tolerate any form of violent assembly or protest, and will take necessary measures to maintain law and order.
