Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the Esan West Local Government Chairman, Collins Aigbogun, over allegations of political violence.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, who made this known to journalists at the police headquarters in Benin, the state capital, on Tuesday, said Aigbogun was already on police wanted list for other alleged criminal activities.
CP Edwin-Iwo explained that Aigbogun was brought to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Benin after responding to a police summons.
The police boss said, “He was invited and reported himself. We later found out he has other criminal charges against him.”
Edwin-Iwo added that Aigbogun had assaulted someone during an altercation with fellow party members.

Regarding the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, the commissioner of police warned non-state actors to stay away from the election, emphasising that they have no role to play.
He disclosed that the police have begun an arms recovery operation across the state’s 18 local government areas to ensure a smooth and peaceful election.
“We are mopping up illegal arms ahead of the election and urge the public to assist by providing information. Our goal is to create a safe environment for a free and fair election,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated that non-state actors are prohibited from carrying arms and are not involved in the election process.
