The collation of results of the ongoing governorship election in Edo State was disrupted on Sunday at Oredo and Ikpoba/Okha local government area collation centre when observers and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were tear-gassed by security personnel.
SaharaReporters gathered that following the disruption, INEC is considering moving the results collation of the local government to its state headquarters.
Reacting to the incident, a pro-democracy, human rights and civic participation advocacy group, Yiaga Africa, warned that collating local government results at the INEC state headquarters violates election results collation procedure, according to the electoral law.
“We want to emphasise that collating LGA results at the state headquarters violates the established procedure for results collation.
“We urge @inecnigeria to stand firm against intimidation and interference. Electoral law permits accredited observers, media, and party agents to monitor results collation at all levels.
“Failure to address these issues risks undermining the legitimacy of what has been a peaceful process since its commencement,” Yiaga Africa said in a post on its X account.
