The protesters sang with passion, defying the President Bola Tinubu’s government which assented to the National Anthem Bill 2024 in May, reverting to the national anthem composed during the first republic, “Nigeria, we hail thee”.
Hundreds of Nigerians currently participating in the ongoing #FearlessInOctober nationwide protests in Lagos State have been seen reciting the old national anthem.
The protesters sang with passion, defying the President Bola Tinubu’s government which assented to the National Anthem Bill 2024 in May, reverting to the national anthem composed during the first republic, “Nigeria, we hail thee”.
In a video uploaded by The Guardian on X, the protesters were heard singing the abolished anthem, “Arise O’ Compatriot”.
The protesters carried several placards, calling for an immediate reversal of anti-people policies implemented so far by the Tinubu Government.
The media had earlier reported that thousands of Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Tuesday morning joined the #FearlessInOctober protest against hardships and poverty that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration has unleashed on them.
In photos of the protests, the media observed that the protesters chanted “We are hungry” as they marched on the roads.
Some of the banners they displayed are; “Bad Governance has ended the dreams of Nigerian youths, end it now” “Enough is Enough – Revolution Now.”
“We are buying fuel N1000 and you expect us not to come out and protest. What are we saying – we are hungry,” one of the protesters said.
Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Comrade Omoyele Sowore, had invited Nigerians across the country to join him in the October 1st protest against hardships, privations, hunger, unemployment, insecurity, and poverty that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration has unleashed on Nigerians.
