In a post on X, Omoyele Sowore shared an update about lawyer Dele Farotimi, who was arrested in Lagos and moved to Ekiti. Sowore stated in his post that Dele Farotimi had been hurriedly prosecuted and sent to prison after being denied bail by an Ado Ekiti judge.
He wrote “The Nigerian justice system is wack, as expected @DeleFarotimi has been hurriedly prosecuted and sent to prison after being denied bail by a judge in Ado Ekiti pre-arranged to do the same.
The @policeng, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, and the judicial officers had it all planned out even before they sent the goons from Ekiti state command RRS (formerly SARS) to abduct him. The case adjourned till December 10, 2024.”
Farotimi was arraigned in court over alleged defamation of character following his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ where he alleged, among others, that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, had compromised the Supreme Court.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, after listening to the police prosecutor, Samson Osubu, who filed a 16-count allegations to which Farotimi pleaded not guilty, adjourned the matter till December 10, 2024.
Mr Babalola asked the Nigerian police to arrest Mr Farotimi and transport him to Ekiti by road on a 334-kilometre trip that lasted more than five hours. This comes more than a year after the senior lawyer donated millions of British pounds to advance human rights and education for African students at King’s College, London.
A video of how the Nigerian police stormed the Lagos office of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, and seized devices belonging to his staff, whisking him away under questionable circumstances had also been released.
The footage showed armed officers storming the premises in what has been described as a “Gestapo-style” raid.
