The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed optimism that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will be released soon.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja, Kalu said that he is actively engaged in efforts to secure Kanu’s release.
Kalu made the remarks during a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, which included lawmakers from the region’s State Houses of Assembly.
The forum, led by Kingsley Ikoro, the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, convened to discuss various issues affecting the South-East.
The Deputy Speaker revealed that high-level, behind-the-scenes dialogues with relevant authorities are currently underway to facilitate Kanu’s release, signalling a continued push for his freedom amidst ongoing political discussions.
Nnamdi Kanu, currently standing trial for treason, has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.
He was arrested in Kenya and forcibly extradited to Nigeria to face charges related to treason.
He stated, “I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers.”
Kalu also mentioned that the outcomes of behind-the-scenes discussions aimed at securing Kanu’s release would soon be visible.
The Deputy Speaker further expressed his support for the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and its goals, emphasizing that the government is working in the best interest of both the Igbo people and Nigerians as a whole.
He said “The power of networking surpasses money. Unity is power. We often fail to recognize our own, losing significant opportunities because of it. We need to end the sit-at-home; it’s destructive. It’s essential for us to unite. The strength of unity and growth is vital.”
He, however, commended the attendees for leaving their respective state assemblies to come to the Federal House for exposure, noting that it would benefit their legislative activities by enhancing their knowledge and impact.
“On the proposed zonal public hearing, we seek your support for the constitutional amendment process. We plan to start in the first and second quarters of next year,” Kalu stated.
“As members of the South East Legislative Forum, you must be united with a shared legislative agenda. Formulate ideas and think about how we can make use of them.”
He encouraged support for the SEDC, noting that some had said President Tinubu would not back its establishment, pointing to the abandonment of the 3Rs. “Let’s support the president. Together, we will build capacity,” Kalu said.
