A mob on Saturday evening, at Onipanu area of Lagos State, allegedly set a car ablaze after the driver ran over a yet-to-be identified pedestrian, killing him in the process.
According to an eyewitness, simply identified as Akeem Suleimon, the incident, which happened at about 8.30 pm on fateful night at Awoyokun, inward Onipanu, was as a result of driver’s carelessness while on excessive speeding.
“The driver apparently on top speed suddenly hit the pedestrian at Onipanu, crushing him to death on the spot in the process,” Suleimon narrated.
The accident which involved a Toyota Venza, with registration number, EKY 839 HU, was later set on fire by mob after the driver narrowly escaped being lynched.
According to the Permanent Secretary,
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the unfortunate incident.
Oke-Osanyitolu told Vanguard that, preliminary investigations conducted by the Agency’s Response Team revealed that the driver was on top speed when he lost control and collided with a male pedestrian that was crossing the highway.
“One yet to be identified adult male lost his life to the incident and had been taken off the scene before arrival of the responders.
“The Agency’s Response Team has informed officials of the Nigerian Police Force of the incident, and volatility of the scene due to activities of miscreants which escalated the incident, vandalized and set the accident vehicle ablaze.
“However, LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team activated the necessary sophisticated recovery truck for the operation.” LASEMA boss stated.
A team of armed policemen, deployed from the State Nigeria Police Command, later arrived at the scene and restored normalcy, as well as ensured smooth recovery of the ill-fated car.
