Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has reinstated ownership of two plots of land in Kaduna metropolis to the family of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
The lands had been revoked two years ago by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The properties include: No. 9 Abakpa GRA, Kaduna – measuring 2,284 square meters, covered by Kaduna State Certificate of Occupancy No. 30575.
No. 1 Degel Road, Ungwan Rimi GRA, Kaduna – measuring 3,705 square meters, covered by Kaduna State Certificate of Occupancy No. 11458.
Reuben Atabo (SAN), counsel to the Abacha family, revealed that the land titles were revoked in 2022 following a public notice issued by the Kaduna State Government, citing violations of the terms of occupancy.
General Sani Abacha’s name was listed among those affected, causing the family to seek legal redress for the embarrassment caused.
The revocation notice, published on April 28, 2022, stated: “This is to inform the general public that His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State has, in exercise of the powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act, 1978, revoked Titles to plots of land within Kaduna metropolis for various contraventions of terms and conditions of Right of Occupancy.”
Governor Uba Sani, however, reversed the decision through letters dated December 10, 2024, issued by Mustapha Haruna, Deed Registrar, on behalf of the Director General of Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS). The letters directed Mohammed Sani Abacha, through his lawyer, to pay outstanding fees to fully reinstate the land titles.
One letter, referencing the Abakpa GRA property, stated: “His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, has, in the powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act 1978, reinstated the aforementioned title… Subject to strict condition of settling all outstanding fees and charges.”
Similarly, the letter concerning the Degel Road property read: “His Excellency… has reinstated your rights and interest over the piece of land… subject to the strict condition of settling all outstanding fees and charges.”
This action by Governor Uba Sani resolves a contentious issue that had lingered between the Abacha family and the Kaduna State Government.
