A faction within NANS has accused its National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, and Students’ Senate President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, of selectively distributing the buses, leaving many students without access to the transportation resource.
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has become embroiled in a crisis following allegations of unequal distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses meant to benefit students nationwide.
A faction within NANS has accused its National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, and Students’ Senate President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, of selectively distributing the buses, leaving many students without access to the transportation resource.
In the petition, the faction claims that the unequal distribution will exacerbate transportation challenges on campuses, leading to economic and logistical hardships for Nigerian students.
The faction also demanded accountability, disciplinary measures, and the immediate intervention of President Bola Tinubu to address the issue.
The petition, jointly signed by several NANS officials, including the Deputy Senate President of Dangote University of Science and Technology, Kano State, Comrade Huzaifa Sabo Usman, and other regional representatives, was sent to key government and institutional leaders. Copies were addressed to the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector-General of Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
“We express our utmost indignation and disappointment at the egregious unequal distribution of the CNG buses recently donated to NANS. This act has caused undue hardship and economic challenges for students nationwide,” the petition read.
The faction has passed a vote of no confidence in Emonefe and Afeez and is calling for their immediate resignation.
The signatories further warned that the situation could lead to widespread unrest among students if not swiftly resolved.
The petition reads, “This decision, made by the President of NANS, Comr. Lucky Emonofe, in collaboration with the Senate President, Comr. Babatunde Akinteye Afeez is a flagrant disregard for the principles of equity, justice, and transparency.”
The union faction explained tha the buses meant to benefit all Nigerian students have been selectively distributed, leaving many students without access to this vital resource.
“This unequal distribution will inevitably lead to a shortage of transportation options within our campuses, causing undue hardship and economic challenges for Nigerian students,” it reads.
They noted that the economic implications of this unequal distribution cannot be overstated.
“Many students rely on affordable transportation to commute from campuses, and the shortage of these buses will only exacerbate the economic challenges facing Nigerian students. This will lead to increased costs for alternative transportation, which will further burden students who are already struggling to cope with the situation,” the petition reads.
“Mr. President, we urge you to take immediate action by addressing this issue, as it will inevitably have far-reaching consequences on your political integrity.”
It adds, “In view of the aforementioned fact, we request that you take the following actions: We demand a thorough investigation into the distribution process to identify those responsible for the unequal distribution of the buses.
“We therefore call for the immediate redistribution of the buses to ensure that all students have equal access to this resource.
“We equally demand that the President and Senate President of NANS be held accountable for their actions and appropriate disciplinary measures taken against them due to the shortage of these buses within campuses.
“From the foregoing, we hereby pass a vote of no confidence on the duo of Lucky Emonefe and Babatunde Akinteye Afeez. We believe that it is your responsibility as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure that the resources meant for the benefit of all students are distributed equitably, fairly, and transparently.”
“We hope that you will take immediate action to address this issue and restore the trust of Nigerian students in the leadership of NANS,” the faction adds.
