Some local government workers in Abia State have staged a protest over the non-payment of their December salaries and 13th-month bonuses.
The aggrieved employees of Abia North Local Government Area bearing placards expressed frustration over alleged errors in the biometric system used to process their payments.
They accused the consultant engaged by the Alex Otti-led government, Chris Ugwunmadu of sabotaging their welfare.
“I came to work every day, yet the biometric report claimed I was absent 17% of the time. This is unfair,” one of the workers said during the protest.
The workers alleged that the biometric errors have led to severe hardships, with many unable to feed their families or afford transportation to work.
They noted that despite Otti’s worker-friendly policies and timely release of funds for salaries and bonuses, the biometric consultant he engaged had failed to rectify the errors.
“The problem is the consultant’s inefficiency, which has caused unnecessary suffering for workers who rely on these payments, especially during the festive period,” another worker said.
The protesters claimed that promises to address the payment issues had not been fulfilled.
They called on Governor Otti to intervene urgently and ensure their payments are made without further delays.
The workers also expressed concerns over the non-payment of the 13th-month bonuses, which, unlike the regular salaries, does not rely on biometric verification.
Over 100 staff members were said to have been affected.
The workers vowed to halt all logging in and out processes until the matter is resolved.
