Ameeting of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) descended into chaos on Wednesday as a fight broke out among members.
The meeting was held at the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja. SaharaReporters learned that the chaos began when a former Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, was allegedly attacked and forced out by supporters of the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
In a video obtained, Ude-Okoye, who has been presenting himself as the party’s National Secretary, was seen shouting and instructing some men dressed in black to enter the meeting.
It took the intervention of the security agents from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and others to restore normalcy at the Secretariat.
Ude-Okoye and Anyanwu are both laying claims to the position of National Secretary.
The meeting was presided over by the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Amb. Umar Damagum.
Others in attendance included Senator Ben Obi, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Board Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, and Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
In 2023, the PDP’s South East zone nominated Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary after the latter emerged as the party’s candidate for the Imo State governorship election.
On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld Ude-Okoye as the PDP National Secretary.
Meanwhile, the party’s presidential candidate during the last election and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently claimed that N50 million is being paid to members of opposition parties by the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress.
Responding, a press statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Tuesday, noted that “Nigeria’s democracy is far stronger than Atiku’s political ambitions.”
It said, “As a veteran politician, one would expect Atiku to understand that while democracy may be about winning election, it is, more importantly, about respecting the will of the electorate and working towards the greater good of all.”
The statement accused Atiku and other opposition party leaders of lacking the ability to lead their parties but wanting to lead Africa’s most populous country.
