Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, has hit back at his Atalanta coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, after being publicly criticized for missing a crucial penalty in their 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge on Tuesday night.
The Nigerian international described the comments as “deeply disrespectful,” emphasizing his commitment to the team and his contributions to the club’s success.

Following the match, Gasperini did not hold back in his post-game analysis, labeling Lookman the “worst penalty taker” and questioning his decision to step up for the spot-kick.
Reacting to the harsh criticism, Lookman took to social media to express his disappointment over the remarks made by his manager.
In a strongly worded statement, the Nigerian National said: “It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement – most of all because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city.
“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
The former Leicester City and Everton winger added that he was not the designated penalty taker but took responsibility in the heat of the moment after being instructed by the assigned taker.
He continued: “Along with our incredible fans, we as a team are hurting too with last night’s result. During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team, I took responsibility in the moment to do so.
“Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power which I’ll continue to do.”
Lookman’s statement has sparked mixed reactions among football fans, with many backing the Nigerian international for his dedication.
The 26-year-old winger has been instrumental for Atalanta this season, contributing crucial goals and assists in both Serie A and European competitions.
Lookman has received backing from Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Super Eagles and other netizens following public criticism by his coach.
The National Team’s X handle quoted Lookman’s statement on the controversy with a message saying: “We are with you, Ade,” showing solidarity with the player.
The national team’s handle also posted graphics showing Lookman’s stats so far in the 2024/2025 season which shows 17 goals and 7 assists. The page also posted videos of him scoring goals with the caption “Ademola The King”.
