The defections were announced during a plenary session on Tuesday by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of Nigeria’s legislative body.
Two members of the House of Representatives have defected from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defections were announced during a plenary session on Tuesday by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of Nigeria’s legislative body.
Hon. Jallo Hussaini Mohammed, who represents the Igabi Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, officially declared his switch from the PDP to the APC.
His defection is seen as a significant move, given the political dynamics in the North and the ongoing realignment of forces within the National Assembly.
Similarly, Hon. Adamu Tanko, the representative for Gurara/Suleja/Tafa Federal Constituency of Niger State, also made the move to the APC, leaving the PDP in what appears to be a strategic political maneuver ahead of the upcoming elections and ongoing political developments.
Both members cited their dissatisfaction with the direction of the PDP and expressed confidence in the leadership of the APC under President Bola Tinubu.
Their defections are seen as part of a larger trend of political realignments sweeping through Nigeria, with several politicians switching allegiance in response to shifting political winds.
Recently, a former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai also dumped APC to join Social Democratic Party a few weeks ago.
El-Rufai accused the current leadership of disregarding internal democracy and treating members with contempt.
In his statement, El-Rufai had said: “As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. It has been my hope since 2013 that my personal values and those of the APC will continue to align up to the time I choose to retire from politics.
“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.”
He revealed that he had repeatedly raised concerns about the party’s trajectory, both in private and public, but his warnings were ignored.
