A video has gone viral of a man, identified as Sani of Askira Close, Pompomari Bypass, Maiduguri, Borno State, brutally assaulting a young girl for plucking mangoes from a tree within his compound.
The footage, widely shared on Facebook and obtained by SaharaReporters, shows Sani mercilessly flogging the defenceless child with big sticks, sparking outrage and calls for justice.
The media also learned that the girl sustained severe injuries from the assault, raising concerns about the potential for permanent disability or even death.
The incident has prompted widespread condemnation, with many demanding that authorities take swift action against the suspect.
In response to the growing outcry, Potent Attorneys Legal Practice & Consultancy has petitioned the Borno State Commissioner of Police, calling for Sani’s immediate arrest and prosecution.
“We demand immediate takeover of the case from civil defence, who made the earlier arrest of the suspect, and take decisive action from your good office,” the petition stated.
It further urged the police to ensure that “justice must not be delayed”.
“This young girl deserves protection, and her assailant must face the full wrath of the law,” it said.
The legal firm outlined specific demands, including a full investigation into the assault, medical and psychological care for the victim, and a firm stance against violence towards children.
Confirming the incident to SaharaReporters, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso Kenneth, stated that the suspect had been arrested and promised to provide more details soon.
“The suspect has been arrested. I will give further updates shortly,” he said.
