The NDC condemned the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of elected officials, labeling the move an attack on democracy and the people of Rivers State.
The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) is set to hold a peaceful protest on April 7, 2025, against the emergency rule declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
This development was announced in a press statement released on April 3.
The NDC condemned the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of elected officials, labeling the move an attack on democracy and the people of Rivers State.
“These actions undermine the will of the people and threaten the stability of the Niger Delta region,” said Mudiaga Ogboru, the National Spokesperson for the NDC.
The protest, scheduled to take place at Isaac Boro Park from 7am, aims to demand the restoration of democratic governance in the state.
SaharaReporters previously reported that the Nigeria Police Force detained the President of the Niger Delta Congress over the group’s planned protest against President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.
According to a March 26 report, the NDC President was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Rivers State.
A source familiar with the situation had told SaharaReporters that the police initially invited NDC Spokesperson Mudiaga Ogboru over his criticism of the emergency rule and for urging the Niger Delta people to exercise their civil rights through protests or other means to express disapproval of the presidential directive.
Confirming the development, Ogboru told SaharaReporters that he had received two separate invitations — one from the Lagos State Police Command and another from the Rivers State Police Command.
Both were related to the planned protest which has now been announced for April 7.
