
A man identified as Jeremiah Kosesochi Nwoke has reportedly passed away while attempting to take the symbolic Agemo statue located at the Itoro Roundabout in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The incident, which occurred overnight on Friday, April 11, 2025, has left residents surprised, especially due to the cultural and traditional importance of the statue in Ijebuland. The Agemo statue is situated close to the roundabout leading to the ultramodern palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
According to local sources, the individual allegedly made several unsuccessful efforts under the cover of darkness to remove the statue. However, after finally dislodging the structure, he reportedly collapsed and did not survive while attempting to move it.
The unusual event has sparked various reactions among residents, with many expressing concerns over the possible spiritual or traditional implications surrounding the statue.
While authorities are yet to release an official statement, investigations are said to be ongoing. The statue has since been recovered and restored to its original position.
The Agemo figure holds a significant place in Ijebu tradition, especially during the annual festival dedicated to its celebration. As such, any tampering with such symbols is taken seriously within the community.
