Ekiti Police Bust Illegal University Study Centre, Arrest Two For Issuing Fake Degrees

The police in Ekiti State have arrested two individuals for operating an illegal university study centre in Ado-Ekiti. 

The centre fraudulently awarded degrees in the name of Kwara State University, Malete.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr. Joseph Eribo, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing in the state capital, while presenting a three-month report of activities by the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to Eribo, detectives acted on credible intelligence received on February 18, 2025, which led to the arrest of the suspects running the illegal centre and issuing fake Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to unsuspecting citizens.

“Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Department, on February 18, received credible intelligence that some syndicates are illegally and unlawfully operating the Kwara State University study centre in Ado-Ekiti, where several Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were issued to unsuspecting members of the public,” the Commissioner said.

He identified the suspects as Adesanmi Sunday and Akinola Olaolu, both of whom, according to police findings, conspired to defraud several students by issuing fake academic certificates under the guise of affiliation with Kwara State University.

“The university authorities were consulted and they denied any connection with the centre and the operators,” Eribo noted.

The suspects have since been arraigned in court. 

“The suspects had been charged to court on 11th April 2025,” Eribo confirmed.

He used the opportunity to warn the public against falling victim to unverified academic institutions and urged individuals to always confirm the accreditation and legitimacy of study centres before enrolling.

The Commissioner also outlined other achievements by the CID during the period under review, including arrests in 12 rape cases, the recovery of stolen vehicles, two cases of child abuse, and the apprehension of suspected murderers and armed robbers.

“While some of the suspects have already been charged to court, others will face prosecution upon completion of ongoing investigations,” Eribo added.
