Three Nigerian teenagers trafficked to Ghana under the false promise of job opportunities have been rescued and repatriated, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
The teenagers—identified as Divine, Favour, and Bright, aged between 17 and 19—were received on Thursday at NiDCOM’s Lagos office.
Originally from Bayelsa and Ebonyi states, the victims alleged they were lured into sex trafficking by their “aunties” who claimed they would help them secure jobs in Ghana, according to Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, NiDCOM, in a statement on Friday.
“Upon their return, the girls were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for profiling and reintegration as part of ongoing collaborative efforts between NiDCOM and NAPTIP,” he said.
According to the statement, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and called for the exposure of perpetrators behind the illegal trade.
“Human trafficking will persist if traffickers and their agents are not exposed and shamed,” she said. “It’s a global issue, and until we stop covering up for those responsible, it won’t end.”
Dabiri-Erewa commended Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the NIDO Ghana Board of Trustees, for his consistent efforts in assisting with rescues. She also acknowledged the role of the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana and appreciated the support of First Lady Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu for aiding with transportation.
Over 169 Nigerians have been repatriated from Ghana in recent months due to similar trafficking incidents.
