The political landscape in Kano State witnessed a major shakeup yesterday as scores of members from the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors, comprising youths, women, and elders from the three senatorial districts of Kano State, were received at the National Assembly in Abuja by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
Senator Jibrin was joined by top government officials and APC stakeholders, including Hon. Yusuf Tabuka, Federal Commissioner of the National Assembly Service Commission, and Hon. Adamu Fanda, Federal Commissioner in the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), among others.
According to the group leaders, the decision to dump NNPP for APC was inspired by Senator Jibrin’s impactful interventions across Kano State and his consistent commitment to development.
In a separate development, Fatima Abubakar, the Women Leader of the NNPP in Dakata, Kano, also led her supporters into the APC fold.
While welcoming the new members, Senator Jibrin described NNPP as a “mushroom political party” and hailed the defectors for aligning with APC, which he called the largest political party in Africa. He assured them of full inclusion and urged them to remain dedicated to the progress of Kano and Nigeria.
The mass defection marks a significant boost for the APC ahead of future political contests in Kano State.
