According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following an intelligence-driven operation that spanned several states and even extended beyond Nigeria’s borders into neighbouring West African country.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the re-arrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a prime suspect in the abduction and brutal killing of late Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly until his death.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following an intelligence-driven operation that spanned several states and even extended beyond Nigeria’s borders into neighbouring West African country.
Ossai had previously escaped from police custody under undisclosed circumstances, prompting a wide-scale manhunt.
The police said upon being located, he attempted to flee from arresting officers and was shot in the leg before being subdued.
He noted that the rearrest marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the high-profile murder, which shocked the state and drew widespread condemnation.
Justice Azuka, known for his dedication to public service and legislative reform, was kidnapped earlier this year and later found dead under harrowing circumstances, sparking outrage and calls for justice across Anambra State and beyond.
In a bid to maintain transparency and reassure the public, the Anambra State Police Command has briefed key stakeholders, including the late lawmaker’s family and the leadership of the State House of Assembly.
During the engagement, the Commissioner of Police acknowledged the lapses that led to Ossai’s initial escape and expressed deep regret over the incident.
The suspect is now assisting authorities with actionable intelligence that has reportedly advanced the ongoing investigation.
Police say efforts have been intensified to apprehend other fugitives believed to be part of the criminal syndicate responsible for the lawmaker’s murder.
“The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its unwavering resolve to bring all perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety and security of Ndi Anambra,” Ikenga stated.
The re-arrest of Ossai is expected to reinvigorate the case and bolster public confidence in the authorities’ commitment to justice and accountability.
