A canoe travelling between Gidan Hussaini and Sabon Garin Hussaini in Sokoto State capsized on Monday, 2 June 2025, resulting in the death of all seven occupants on board, including the paddler.
The incident occurred at about 11am as witnesses said that no one survived the accident.
In response to the tragedy, security operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene.
They blocked access to the riverside to prevent a large crowd of grieving relatives and onlookers from gathering.
A local rescue team was immediately mobilised to carry out recovery efforts. All the bodies were successfully retrieved and later handed over to the victims’ families for burial.
The atmosphere in both communities remains sombre, as residents mourn the loss and call for improved safety measures on local waterways, a security expert, Zagazola Makama, added.
Barely a week ago, SaharaReporters reported that Reverend Father James Omeh, the Parish Priest of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Gulu, died in a flood incident.
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday, 24 May 2025, along the Lapai-Gulu Road, following heavy rainfall that caused flash flooding in the area.
A female passenger who was travelling with him also died.
It was gathered that the priest was travelling to Gulu around noon when he encountered the collapsed Lapai-Gulu bridge after passing Duma village.
He attempted to turn back but was caught in rising floodwaters.
“Rev. Fr. Omeh and the female passenger were found lifeless at the scene,” a source said. “One person is still missing.”
He was driving a white Hilux vehicle when the flood swept it into a deep, waterlogged gully.
Local volunteers and the Sarkin Ruwa helped to recover the vehicle and retrieve the bodies of the priest and the female passenger.
