Afuel tanker exploded on Tuesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State, igniting a massive fire and causing heavy traffic between the Oremeji and Olorunsogo axis.
The blaze, which broke out near Sumurah, led to significant disruption as emergency responders rushed to the scene. The fire continued to rage as of press time, but no casualties had been reported.
The Oyo State Fire Service responded to the emergency, deploying personnel and equipment to tackle the flames.
Confirming the incident in a phone interview to The PUNCH on Tuesday, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyemi Akinyinka, said, “Yes, a tanker is on fire near Sumurah, between Olorunsogo and Oremeji. Our response team is already at the scene.”
Traffic authorities have since diverted vehicles away from the affected section of the expressway, as firefighting efforts continued into the evening.
In January, SaharaReporters reported that a petrol-laden tanker exploded in Ibadan, killing the driver and injuring one other person.
According to the state fire service, the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and overturned into a nearby pit before catching fire.
The incident resulted in the death of the tanker driver and injured the motor boy.
