Tragedy struck the Yelwata community in Benue State over the weekend after a brutal attack left hundreds dead and many others injured. Among the victims is a woman who lost her entire family, five children and her mother, to the senseless violence.
The Yelwata Attack: A Night of Horror
The deadly assault occurred on Friday night, around 10 pm, and extended into the early hours of Saturday.
Local reports estimate that over 200 lives were lost, making it one of the most devastating attacks in recent times in the region.
Amid the heartbreaking aftermath, a video has surfaced showing a grief-stricken mother, her face swollen from weeping, recounting the horror to reporters.
In the clip, she shares how she lost all five of her children, along with her beloved mother, in the massacre.
Public Outcry and Emotional Reactions
The footage, which has since gone viral, was shared by UK-based Nigerian medical professional and activist, @OurFavOnlineDoc on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He captioned it:
“This lady lost all her 5 children and she also lost her mother at the recent Yelwata Massacre in Benue State.
The pain is deep and piercing. How do you console someone like this? How do you tell her to ‘reconcile’ with those who wiped out her family?”
The video has stirred widespread outrage, with Nigerians at home and abroad expressing anger, sorrow, and a renewed call for justice and security in the region. Many have questioned how such acts of violence continue to go unchecked, leaving innocent civilians to bear unimaginable pain.
A Mother’s Grief the Nation Cannot Ignore
For this grieving mother, the road ahead is filled with pain and unanswered questions. Her story is just one among many from the Yelwata community, but it underscores the human cost of ongoing violence in Benue and across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
The tragedy has reignited debates on government inaction, lack of security infrastructure, and the urgent need for a sustainable peace strategy in volatile communities.
