St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has made Nigeria proud by emerging as the overall winner of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition.
The virtual event, held on June 19, 2025, featured high-performing schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Representing Nigeria were Britarch Schools and Sure Start School (both in Abuja), St. Augustine’s College in Jos, and St. John Vianney Science College. Competing from the UK were Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.
After several intense rounds of intellectually engaging debates, St. John Vianney Science College impressed judges with their sharp arguments and confident delivery. They defeated UK-based Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School to advance to the finals.
In a gripping final round, the Anambra school faced off against fellow Nigerian contender St. Augustine’s College. The debate was closely contested, but St. John Vianney Science College ultimately emerged victorious securing their place in history as the first-ever champions of the UK-Nigeria Debate Competition.
The win has been widely celebrated, with many praising the students’ eloquence, preparation, and the school’s commitment to academic excellence on an international stage.
