The Academic Board of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has approved the withdrawal of 273 students over poor academic performance and expelled six others for involvement in examination malpractice.
The development was announced on Monday in a statement issued by the institution’s Rector and Chairman of the Academic Board, Dr. Salisu Usman.
According to Dr. Usman, the decision was taken during the board’s 120th meeting, which reviewed the first-semester results of the 2024/2025 academic session.
The affected students, he said, failed to meet the minimum academic requirements despite the polytechnic’s efforts to provide a supportive learning environment.
He stated that the board’s action affects students in 20 departments and 42 academic programmes.
In addition to the withdrawals, six students were expelled after being found guilty of serious examination offences, including impersonation and possession of unauthorized materials during exams.
Dr. Usman revealed that two of the expelled students belonged to the Business Administration and Accountancy departments, while the remaining four were from the Mass Communication department.
“The Central Examination Misconduct Committee, led by Dr Grace Ehimony, investigated the cases thoroughly. Following the committee’s recommendation, the board approved the students’ expulsion without delay,” he said.
Mr Usman reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic excellence and integrity.
He commended the board members for their dedication and consistent support in upholding high academic standards.
The rector also encouraged students to remain focused and make effective use of available resources to excel in their studies.
