Just a day after the killing of a 200-level Chemistry department student, suspected armed robbers have again struck another off-campus student lodge of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State.
It was learnt that the latest robbery took place in the early hours of Tuesday at ‘Malagi Lodge’ in the State Low-Cost area.
According to students, the robbers were armed with a pistol and a cutlass and stole five iPhones — including an iPhone 14 Pro Max — as well as a black Haoju motorcycle.
The motorcycle was later recovered by police along Agaie Road.
“Robbery occurred again today around 2:30am this morning at ‘Malagi lodge’ here in the state locust adjacent to ‘Mai wankin hula shop’.
“This sad incident has caused the loss of five iPhones including 14promax, they also absconded with Haoju bike (black colour) which was recovered by the policemen almost immediately along Agaie road,” a student stated.
“The robbers were said to have been in possession of a pistol gun and a Cutlass, they were only two in number,” the source added.
It followed the death of Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student who was stabbed in the neck during a robbery at ‘Nda Kitabu Lodge’ opposite the university’s main gate around the same time a day earlier.
The media had reported that Jafar had returned to campus on Sunday, 22nd June, and was attacked around 2:30am. He died shortly after being taken to the General Hospital in Lapai.
The news of his death sparked protests, with students blocking the Agaie–Lapai Road to demand action on the rising insecurity in the host community. During the protest, the Founder of Lapai TV was reportedly assaulted near the university gate.
In reaction to the tragic loss, IBBUL management declared Tuesday, 24th June, and Wednesday, 25th June, 2025, as lecture-free days.
The University said this was to allow students and staff to mourn, reflect, and pray for the repose of the student’s soul.
A statement by Alhaji Baba Akote, Deputy Registrar, Information, confirmed that calm had returned to Lapai and both the Main and Kobo campuses. It refuted claims that students had come under attack by locals.
“Such information is false and misleading. The situation in Lapai is now calm, and students are encouraged to go about their academic and personal activities without hindrance,” the statement clarified.
To forestall further incidents, the University said it has introduced regular security patrols around student lodges and major access roads.
It also urged students to remain law-abiding, refrain from spreading unverified information, and cooperate with security personnel.
