Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has called for the cancellation of the ongoing local government elections, alleging that the exercise has been marred by irregularities and deliberate voter suppression.
In an interview with Nigeria Info on Saturday, Bucknor-Akerele expressed frustration over her inability to cast her vote at her polling unit. “I have been to my own unit, my name is not there,” she said.
She also claimed that polling units were moved without notice, making it difficult for voters to locate their designated centres.
“There are units supposed to be in front of a co-hotel, they have brought them here to Ajose Adeogun,” she said.
She accused those behind the election of orchestrating a plan to favour a particular party.
“There is a clear effort to rig the election in favour of one party. Many people are not able to vote because they have completely disrupted all the polling units,” she said.
Bucknor-Akerele urged the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to cancel the election, citing widespread disenfranchisement and logistical failures.
It was earlier reported on Saturday that several residents of Lagos State have lamented the shoddy conduct of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) personnel in the ongoing local government elections across the state.
According to multiple accounts from the field obtained by SaharaReporters, many locations in Lagos either lack LASIEC officials or suffer from the absence of electoral materials.
For instance, as of the time of this report, it was gathered that Mende in Maryland is still waiting for LASIEC officials, while no election is ongoing at Ajeromi Ifelodun.
At Ibafon, the same situation was recorded, with no polling unit commencing voting.
Police personnel were also said to be absent at the polling units, while there was no voters’ register and no accreditation process in place.
One of the agitated agents in Ajeromi noted that it was stated materials would be distributed by 3am.
