Kaduna State security agencies have reportedly issued a directive barring supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from holding a rally in the state to celebrate his birthday today, July 19, 2025.
This was made known by activist and Obi supporter, Mallam Jabir, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Kaduna State security agencies have just issued a directive that we can’t do rally in the state, citing orders from above. What are your thoughts on this development?” he tweeted.
The cancelled rally was intended as part of nationwide celebrations to mark Obi’s birthday, with supporters planning peaceful walks and goodwill events in several cities. However, the sudden ban in Kaduna has stirred public debate, with many questioning the clampdown on what was meant to be a peaceful and symbolic gathering.
Critics have accused the government of suppressing civic freedom and opposition voices, especially in light of recent warnings issued to Obi by Edo State Governor Okpebholo not to enter his state without “clearance.”
The Kaduna restriction has added fuel to mounting concerns about democratic space, political intimidation, and the safety of opposition figures under the current administration.
