A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has expressed concerns over the growing disconnect between the realities on ground and what President Bola Tinubu is being told by those around him.
While speaking on Channels TV programme, Garba cautioned that sycophants in the president’s circle are painting a false picture of the country and the party’s health, warning that such misrepresentations could prove costly if not addressed.
“They (ADC coalition) hope for our loss, and that is why we need to be serious,” he said.
“That is the more reason why we need to be very sincere with ourselves and make sure that the leadership of the party is somebody that is truthful and capable of listening to criticisms and accepting the facts without any flattery.”
“Without any sycophancy because I believe there is a lot of sycophants around the president; people are telling him that things are okay – things are not okay.”
Garba also pointed to the shifting political landscape in the North following the exit of former President Muhammadu Buhari from power in 2023 and his eventual death in early July 2025.
According to him, the APC can no longer rely on the once-guaranteed northern bloc vote that contributed significantly to Buhari’s electoral victories.
“Naturally, there is going to be this kind of tension,” he said, recalling the historical significance of the northern vote.”
“The 12 million northern bloc votes that Buhari was known to have gotten in previous elections before his eventual victory in 2015 were no longer available, even before his death in early July 2025.”
He continued: “Buhari left the presidency in 2023, and when you look at the outcome of the 2023 election, the APC had only 5.5 million votes in the north. Where were the 12 million votes?”
Despite this decline, Garba acknowledged that the APC still emerged victorious in the last general elections, attributing the win to effective planning.
“But yet we won the election based on the system that was established, the structures in place and the strategies deployed.
“What we need now is to re-engineer our strategies again now with his absence,” Garba stated.
Garba is a former Presidential aspirant.
His comments come as coalition ADC has vowed to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Late Buhari has a large following in the North, it however remains unclear what impact would happen to the APC with his demise.
