In the aftermath of a devastating flood that swept through parts of Yola South Local Government Area, the Adamawa State Government has ordered an immediate relief intervention to aid victims affected by the deluge.
Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, who visited the worst-hit communities of Shagari and Yolde Pate, described the destruction as “heartbreaking” following over 10 hours of torrential rainfall that claimed two lives, injured several others, and destroyed homes and farmlands.
Speaking during a visit to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola—where some victims are receiving medical care—Professor Farauta expressed deep concern and ordered the swift distribution of food items, clothing, medical supplies, and temporary shelters to displaced residents.
“We woke up to a terrible flood that has claimed lives and caused significant suffering. The state government is committed to responding swiftly to cushion the effects on affected citizens,” she assured.
Dr. Yusuf Nuhu of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit confirmed the fatalities and noted that those hospitalised were responding positively to treatment.
However, ongoing rescue operations face challenges.
The Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ladan Ayuba, highlighted the residents’ reluctance to evacuate their homes due to fear of looting, which further complicates the response.
One flood victim, Aliyu Mustapha, recounted the trauma of losing his livelihood, raising fears for missing children who were swept away in the floodwaters.
