The Delta State Police Commissioner, Abaniwonda Olufemi, has ordered an orderly room trial for six police officers caught on viral video brutalising a young man in Asaba, the state capital.
The video of the incident, which went viral on social media on Sunday, showed the police officers beating the young man, dragging him, tearing his clothes and brutally assaulting him.
An X (formerly Twitter) user, @ChuksEricE, who shared the video on his handle, stated that the incident occurred near Asaba Specialist Hospital, on Okpanam Road, Asaba.
“Between Nigerian police officers and a young man near Asaba Specialist Hospital, Okpanam Road, Delta State,” Chuks wrote.
Another X user, @dammiedammie35, who also posted the video, stated that an eyewitness said the officers allegedly searched the young man. When they wanted to search his bag, he instructed the officers not to insert any incriminating items into it.
According to the eyewitness, the young man requested that the officer searching his bag show him his hands before searching the bag.
However, rather than show his hands as requested by the young man, the officers pounced on him and started beating him.
Reacting to the viral video, the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, described the incident as “barbaric and unprofessional.”
In a statement released on Sunday, Edafe said the officers involved have been identified and summoned to the state police headquarters in Asaba.
“This is barbaric and unprofessional by the policemen. They have been identified and summoned to the headquarters by the CP for proper disciplinary action,” Edafe stated.
According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police has also ordered that the team leader of the officers be formally queried, while the other five officers are to be detained pending the commencement of the orderly room trial.
“On receipt of this video, which captures some policemen assaulting a young man around Asaba Specialist Hospital area on Sunday, 27th July 2025, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately ordered that the Policemen be identified and brought before the command headquarters for immediate disciplinary action.
“The men have been identified, and detained pending the commencement of their orderly room trial while their Team leader who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police has been queried.”
“The CP wishes to reiterate that it’s not in the character of the Command to trample on the rights of citizens, assault or harass people,” Edafe said.
“He assures members of the public that the officers concerned will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others, noting that under his watch, such conduct by officers will not be tolerated.”
The police spokesperson stated that the CP appealed to the public to remain calm and assured them of justice.
“To this end, anyone who has any information on the assaulted victim should kindly reach me via DM (Direct Message) or the PPRO’s office,” he added.
