Presidential hopeful and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has once again reaffirmed his commitment to serve only one term of four years if elected President of Nigeria, describing the vow as “sacrosanct.”
In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, Obi drew parallels with historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela—leaders whose brief but impactful tenures left lasting legacies. He stressed that purposeful leadership does not require prolonged time in office.
“History shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it,” Obi said. “Longevity in office is not a mark of success; rather, it is purposeful, accountable service—however brief—that defines true statesmanship.”
Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, responded to recent public scepticism about his vow. While some had dismissed his promise as unbelievable or even questioned his mental fitness, Obi insisted that such reactions stem from decades of broken political promises by other leaders—not his own record.
“I understand the basis of their scepticism… But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation,” he stated.
He noted that he had fulfilled clear promises made to Anambra people, including reforms in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and fiscal responsibility—without resorting to theatrics or dishonouring his word.
“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution,” Obi said, referencing the document’s provision for a renewable four-year presidential tenure.
The Labour Party standard bearer further stressed that his one-term pledge is driven by the belief that transformational leadership is possible within 48 months if anchored on focus, integrity, and commitment.
“Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference,” Obi declared.
He listed key priorities his administration would pursue if elected: overhauling governance, tackling insecurity, boosting education and healthcare, promoting small businesses, fighting corruption, and transforming Nigeria into a productive economy anchored on agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.
“These are not utopian dreams,” he concluded. “They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
