President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ms. Rinsola Abiola, daughter of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, as the new Director-General of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC), stirring reactions over the administration’s pattern of political appointments.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, Ms. Abiola, described as an expert in strategic communication and government relations, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu.
She will now head the Abuja-based leadership institution responsible for training citizens in leadership, patriotism, and civic responsibility.
The late MKO Abiola, Rinsola’s father, was the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, a historical figure whose name remains symbolic in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.
In the same announcement, President Tinubu also appointed Nasir Bala Aminu Ja’oji as Senior Special Assistant on Citizenship and Leadership. Ja’oji, the statement noted, had served as Special Adviser on Mobilisation to the Governor of Kano State and as a member of the Governing Council of the Coordinated Arewa Youth Groups.
He is described as an advocate of women and youth empowerment.
Critics have increasingly accused the Tinubu administration of favouring political allies, family members of prominent figures, and loyalists in key appointments while sidelining merit-based recruitment.
However, the Presidency insists that its choices are based on competence and proven track records.
The statement on the appointments reads, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ms. Rinsola Abiola as Director-General of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC).
“Ms. Abiola, an expert in strategic communication and government relations, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President.
“In addition, President Tinubu appointed Nasir Bala Aminu Ja’oji as Senior Special Assistant on Citizenship and Leadership.
“Mr. Ja’oji, who had served as Special Adviser on Mobilisation to the Governor of Kano State and a member of the Governing Council of Coordinated Arewa Youth Groups, is an advocate of women and youth empowerment and development.”
