The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), gave the affected areas to include Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.
A heavy downpour in the early hours of Friday has submerged several areas in Potiskum, Yobe State, displacing hundreds of residents.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), gave the affected areas to include Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje, confirmed that the agency received an emergency alert and promptly activated field teams for rapid assessment and intervention.
Although, no loss of life has been recorded so far, Goje said “the detailed assessment is ongoing, and the government will ensure that life-saving support, protection, and immediate relief are provided to all affected persons.”
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has directed SEMA to provide immediate relief to the affected communities.
He noted “the governor’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents has been reiterated, with a call for communities to remain vigilant during the rainy season and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.”
SaharaReporters reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Yobe State, warning of potential flash flooding, riverine flooding, and soil erosion.
Residents had been advised to take necessary precautions to minimise the impact of the flooding.
The current weather forecast for Potiskum shows thunderstorms likely, with a high temperature of 79°F and a chance of rain 100%.
The government and emergency services said they are working to mitigate the effects of the flooding and provide support to those affected.
