A tragic accident in the early hours of today has claimed multiple lives and left several others injured in front of Ebonyi State University Permanent Site Campus.
The crash involved a commercial bus conveying passengers from Benue to Onitsha and a 911 truck transporting sachet water from Enugu to Abakaliki. The head-on collision resulted in fatalities and serious injuries, plunging families into mourning and survivors into critical medical battles.
Eyewitnesses at the scene blamed the incident on the controversial Ishieke Police checkpoint, alleging that officers had partially barricaded the road during the night. This obstruction, they said, created a dangerous bottleneck that directly contributed to the collision.
The Ishieke axis has long been notorious for road mishaps, with motorists repeatedly attributing accidents to unsafe practices by checkpoint officers. Today’s tragedy adds to the growing toll of preventable accidents in the area, raising renewed concerns over traffic safety, road management, and the conduct of security operatives.
As emergency responders worked to evacuate victims, many residents called for urgent reforms in traffic enforcement and checkpoint operations to avert further needless loss of lives.
